7 Bunjurgen Estate Vineyard
Bunjurgen Estate Vineyard is located 10 kilometres south of Boonah on a rise in the Teviot Valley on the way to Mount Alford, in the beautiful Heart of the Scenic Rim, in South East Queensland, Australia.
Easy drinking Shiraz and boutique Chambourcin wines are available with picturesque views of the Scenic Rim mountains.
A two-tier system operates at Bunjurgen Estate with respect to wine naming and selection. The wines may be named as The Colonel’s Selection if certain superior quality criteria are met, and this is not an automatic decision from year to year - or be classified as a Bellbrook Series wine in keeping with the name of the property and the colonial history.
The Colonel’s Selection name has its origin in the fact that the first four vines, which were planted in 2003, were actually planted by two Colonels and two Nurses. The Colonels were Father and Son, and the two Nurses two wonderful family friends. The Colonel’s Selection title is awarded to Bunjurgen Estate’s Premier wine, hand-picked to assure quality fruit, and exhibiting exciting fruit driven flavours enhanced by focused ageing.
You will find us at the intersection of Bunjurgen, F.M.Bell and Brent Roads, Bunjurgen, Qld 4310 (just south of Boonah).

9 Barney Creek Vineyard
We are one of the smallest vineyards in South East Queensland but also one of the more imaginative. We have 1,000 vines planted on 1 ½ acres of ridge top with one side sloping steeply into the upper reaches of the Logan River and the other side facing Mt Barney Creek, and with a backdrop of mountains of the southern Border Ranges, the panoramic view is awe inspiring.
We produce approximately 2,000 bottles of wine a year, predominately from our own grapes. You will not find many mainstream grape varieties planted here except shiraz. Fifty percent of the vineyard is planted with Petit verdot, a little known and under utilised grape which is gaining popularity in warmer regions and is well suited to our climate and conditions. Three rows of Shiraz give us classic flavour for dry reds, rose’ and sparkling. Four rows of Mouvedre (Mataro) make a traditional blend with Shiraz along with the ½ row of Grenache which we also grow. Finally, a recent planting of Tannat should give us a very small amount of intensely flavoured wine with strong tannins. We also have a white wine in the range (currently verdelho) made for us by wine maker, Jason Hannay from grapes sourced in SE Qld.
Our current range is:
- 2008 Petit Verdot Merlot
- 2009 Petit Verdot
- 2009 Shiraz Mouvedre
- 2010 Autumn Rose’
- 2010 Sunset Rose’
- Fortified Late Harvest Petit Verdot
Our tasting room is available to cottage guests although pre-arranged tastings can be organised for small ( minimum 4 ) to mid size groups. For our cottage guests, Saturday evening is our usual tasting time where our range of 5 or 6 wines is sampled. They can then enjoy a glass of their favourite wine, followed by a port and accompanied by an antipasto platter made up of local and homemade produce.
The vineyard was planted in January 2004 after a complete soil profile and analysis was undertaken.
Our consultant, Peter Scudamore-Smith, deemed our site suitable but with some work needed to break up an intermediate clay layer. This was achieved using a 25 tonne excavator to dig a 1.2 metre deep by 600mm wide trench along each row and then ripping the bottom of the trench another 600mm after applying lime and composted chicken manure. The excavated material was then blended and backfilled. This, along with picking up rocks, erecting posts and trellis, installing irrigation, planting and training vines was all done by our immediate family: my wife, Jennifer, sons Rohan and Alex and myself, Barry.
Barney Creek Vineyard Cottages has been offering guests secluded accommodation in a world heritage region for over 13 years. In this time owners Jennifer Seale & Barry Marshall have created 3 beautifully adorned cottages. The Lakeside Bungalow & the Hill Station offer spa baths, and decks with stunning views and are ideal for couples looking for seclusion, romance & pampering.
The Garden Cottage sleeps 6 in farmhouse comfort with its shingle roof verandah & a piano. Three bedrooms include 2 queen size beds & 2 single beds. All the cottages have full kitchens and barbeques for those who wish to self cater, along with woodfired heaters, CD and DVD players and a selection of music, movies, games and reading material.
Enjoy quiet walks, birdwatching, swimming, fishing, spying the platypus at play or walk to the hilltop & watch the sun set on Mt Barney.

6 Welgan Estate Wines
Welgan Estate Wines is situated at Anthony which is an area between Harrisville and Kalbar in the Scenic Rim. We are a very young vineyard with Shiraz and Verdelho now producing and Alicante Bouchet and Vermentino in the near future.
Our vineyard symbol is the Rainbow. It is quite common to see a rainbow over the vineyard after rain. Maybe this is the reflection of the dreamtime Rainbow Serpent which may have made the north-south slope and water course at the bottom of the vineyard.
At the 2010 Boonah show we received three awards in the wine section, with a bronze medal award for our 2009 Shiraz.
At present we are only releasing our wines via shows, markets and mail orders.

5 Normanby Wines
Cellar Door Open Daily 10am - 5pm except Good Friday, Christmas Day and before 1pm Anzac Day
Normanby Wines vineyard and cellar door is set at the gateway to the beautiful ‘Heart of the Scenic Rim’ just one kilometre from the delightful small country town of Harrisville. This tranquil rural township is set half way between Boonah road at Peak Crossing and the Cunningham highway, just 25 minutes south of Ipswich, less than an hour from Brisbane and just under an hour and a half from the Gold Coast.
Sit and relax in the courtyard or on the lawns at Normanby, take in the views of Flinders Peak and Ivory’s Rock while listening to nothing but the birds singing. Visitors find this remarkable as one said, "It’s so near, yet seems so ‘Far from the madding crowd’ yes the ideal setting when we have our ‘Jazz in the Vineyard’.
Our initial vines of Verdelho and Shiraz were planted in September 1999 with Durif, Chambourcin, Grenache, Viognier and Merlot over the next three years. Our efforts were soon rewarded as the first vintage of Verdelho soon won a bronze medal followed by the Shiraz being chosen in the top 100 Australian wines of 2002. In that same year the Scenic Rim wine trail was launched showcasing the beautiful valleys of the Scenic Rim and the wines grown and produced therein. Normanby’s medal count has now reached over 60 including Champion wines. Add to this the medals others have won in the wine trail, and then reflect on all the overseas awards won by our valleys first pioneer vineyards of over 130 years ago in London, Paris and Berlin. Yes the Scenic Rim is beautiful and it is wine country!
While tasting our wines, learn about each one, the history of the variety, its vintage, how they are made, when to drink it and what food to enjoy it with, as with our excellent winemaker Ray Costanzo, our mission is to make ‘Wines to Dine For!’
Learn about local history, places of interest to visit, but before you move on, maybe have a game of Boule on the lawn or use the commercial barbeque available in our shaded courtyards.
We can also give visitors a tour of the vineyard and show the characteristics of the grape varieties and how they are grown and how sun, rainfall, shade, temperature, soil, stress and time of picking influence the wine, and we emphasize that all the grapes used in our wine comes only from our vineyard. To us this is very important as quality and consistent flavors can be maintained and this is why we hand pick, even if it costs such a lot more we get cleaner, undamaged, rot free, grapes.
Even before we planted the vines we took soil samples over 164 acres and with expert advise chose our vineyard. The care we took may explain our medal count, or just maybe, it might be, what the French call Terroir, something not easily translated to English, though related to climate, soil and natural elements generally considered beyond the control of man. Who knows? .... Maybe James May’s own translation of the French Terroir to the English ‘Cobblers’ is right? You be the judge on your "Great Wine Adventure!".
